Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Thursday called for more efforts to improve water conservancy work, to improve China's capacity to fight floods and droughts.

Hui made the remarks when chairing a State Council meeting on water conservancy work.

"Frequent flooding and drought has rung alarm bells for us and indicated that the nation's water conservancy efforts are insufficient," Hui said.

Southwest China experienced a serious drought from last winter to spring this year.

China also suffered serious flooding and landslides during this year's flood season.

Hui urged various departments to repair water conservancy projects efficiently and before the next flood season.

Rural water works should be developed to facilitate agriculture and drinking water safety in rural areas, he said.
