U.S. supports services for low emission program

The United States has incorporated Bangladesh in a list of four countries for its Support Services for Low Emission Development (SSLED) program, an official statement Dhaka said Thursday.
It said USAID chief in Bangladesh Demise Rollins informed Environment and Forest State Minister Hassan Mahmud about his country's decision saying "U.S. has selected Bangladesh on priority basis for the sincere and timely initiatives of the Bangladeshi government in combating the onslaughts of climate change".
He said a high-profile U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) delegation is expected to visit Bangladesh next month to identify the areas of cooperation when the environment and forest ministry of Bangladesh would coordinate their engagements.
The U.S. government in July this year assured Bangladesh of providing 2.1 billion taka (about 30 million U.S. dollars) for promotion of Low Emission Development Strategies (LEDS).
After Copenhagen Climate Conference, it was the first commitment of the U.S. government following a number of European countries to support Bangladesh to combat adverse impacts of climate change.
