Shanghai Zoo has made a special toothbrush for its three hippos. Before the brushes were made, handlers cleaned the teeth with big brooms, said the zoo Wednesday.

The huge toothbrush, which is 1.2 meters long, is used three times a week. "Usually, wild hippos don't need their teeth cleaned as they usually eat grass which is not likely to get stuck in the gap between their teeth," said Pan Xiuwen, an official with the zoo. "But at the zoo, we feed them fruit and vegetables which can easily get stuck in their teeth." Visitors can see the hippos having their teeth brushed on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
