An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted Santa Cruz Islands at 14:36:56 GMT on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 17.00 km, was initially determined to be at 10.8529 degrees south latitude and 165.3245 degrees east longitude.

The Santa Cruz Islands are a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, part of Temotu Province of the Solomon islands.
