Heavy rains have disrupted train services in central and eastern Sri Lanka, officials said Sunday.

Wijaya Samarasinghe, the national railways superintendent said the services from the capital Colombo to the Eastern Province and the Central Province have been suspended.

"Both tracks remain under water due to heavy rains. Mud slips have completely halted the train services between Kandy and Matale in the Central Province," Samarasinghe said.

The chief minister of the Central Province said schools in the area would be closed on Monday due to continued bad weather.

Floods in the Eastern Province over the last two weeks marooned nearly 600,000 people with Batticaloa district suffering most.

The meteorological department said that the bad weather with heavy rains and strong winds will prevail in several areas in the country and continue till Monday.
