Jia Qinglin, China's top political advisor, urged Hainan, the country's tourism island, to vigorously promote a green economy and pursue low-carbon development.

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, made the remarks during his inspection tour of China's southernmost island province of Hainan from last Thursday to Tuesday.

During the tour, Jia visited some cities and counties, economic zones, scenic spots, ethnic villages, factories and agricultural planting bases to exchange views with local officials and civilians on the scientific development of the island.

He hopes that Hainan would intensify its efforts to optimize its economic structure and improve the livelihood of residents.

To this end, Jia encouraged the island province to achieve rapid development in modern agriculture by promoting new technologies to save land, fertilizer, water and energy.

Local producers should ensure green and safe production of agricultural products, Jia said.

Jia noted that the island should also greatly develop green manufacturing, marine economy and modern services. He added that the province should also further regulate the order of the tourism market.

Jia stressed the importance of protecting the ecological environment during the island's development process.
