Torrential rains disrupted air traffic Friday in the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, stranding over 10,000 passengers.

Rainstorms battered the city of Chengdu from morning to noon Friday, prompting the city's airport to close for two hours at noon, the airport said in a statement.

A total of 130 flights were delayed, while 25 others were cancelled, according to the statement. Twenty-four planes were forced to land at nearby airports, it said.

About 7,000 passengers were still stranded by late afternoon, according to the statement.

Precipitation levels at the airport have exceeded 100 mm and more downpours have been forecasted for Friday night, the statement said.
