Spain is bracing itself for a weekend of freezing temperatures as the cold snap that has affected eastern and central Europe slowly moves south.

The wave of "Siberian" cold is expected to arrive on Thursday and last until Sunday and is expected to see temperatures in the country drop to 9 degrees centigrade below zero.

The sensation of cold is expected to be made worse by a northerly wind of between 30-40 kilometers per hour.

It is the coldest weather that the country has experienced in the past seven years.

The thermometer will drop to around minus five or minus 10 degrees in central Spain and will not climb above freezing point in many areas of the north, while in mountain areas such as the Picos de Europa and the Pyrenees the temperature will fall to below minus 20 degrees centigrade.

Even areas such as the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands, which usually enjoy average temperatures of between 10-15 degrees centigrade at this time of year, will suffer freezing weather with snowfalls predicted in the hills and even down to sea level.
