The smugglers would profit in the loophole of logistic companies and ship the ivories stealthily, or hide them in high-class redwood furniture products. A geological convenience in Puzhai has resulted in the smuggling rampancy.

Ivory dealers say their products were mainly from Africa, such as South Africa and Nigeria. Usually smugglers in Vietnam buy the ivories first before reselling them to Chinese smugglers. The huge profit and relatively light penalty both explain the large number of people engaging in the illegal trade.

Police Chief Huang Qun said ivory smuggling isn't usually treated with due seriousness, compared to violent crimes; law enforcement agencies sometimes wouldn't bother to charge the offenders. But he noted that ecology is a holistic concept, and the killing of elephants may lead to ecological damage that mankind is unable to bear.
