U.S. oil giant Chevron on Thursday rejected accusations made by the Brazilian prosecutor's office against it over a oil spill in the Frade field, off the Rio de Janeiro coast in November.
Chevron and Transocean, the company's partner in the drilling of the well in question, have been criminally charged for the spill of some 2,400 oil barrels. According to the Brazilian authorities, the companies drilled with more pressure than the maximum recommended in the geological studies made in the area.
"We are confident that an objective analysis of the facts will demonstrate that we acted in a responsible manner. We will defend the reputation of our company and collaborators," Chevron said in a press release.
The company also highlighted that no one died or was injured in the incident, that there was no impact on marine life, and that the spilled oil did not reach Rio beaches.
On a second oil spill in the Frade field which occurred in mid- February, Chevron stated that the authorities were immediately notified when the spill was discovered. It stressed that proper containment equipments had been installed, but did not clarify whether the second spill was related to the first one, as the Brazilian authorities had stated.
