Four animal rights activists have been arrested after they boarded a live export ship at the port of Fremantle in Western Australia, police said on Wednesday.
Police said the four men who were arrested at the port early on Wednesday would be charged with trespass.
About a dozen activists boarded the vessel AL Shuwaikh under the cover of darkness to film animal abuse, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News reported.
Three female protesters locked themselves to the vessel while another two were locked themselves to the gate of the port, police said.
The activists believe that the live export of sheep is cruel and inhumane.
"What we are trying to highlight and raise awareness about is that it's not just overseas that these animals are being mistreated, as is evidenced by the videos we're seeing coming out of the ports that they're destined to go to, it's actually the cruelty starting here in Australia," one of the protesters told the ABC.
