The gas leak from the Elgin Platform in the North Sea near Scotland has been stopped, according to the French operator Total.

British media reported on Wednesday that Total says it had succeeded in plugging the leak, by pumping heavy mud into the well, which started on Tuesday and had stopped the leak within 12 hours.

"A major turning point has been achieved," said Yves-Louis Darricarrere, Total's head of exploration and production.

He was quoted as saying "We shall now fully complete the ongoing task and take into account the lessons learnt form this incident."

British Department of Energy and Climate Change stated on Tuesday that it had been informed about the beginning of the operation. But it has not announced the verification of the success yet.

The leak began on March 25 and all 238 workers were evacuated from the platform located in waters less than 100 meters deep and 240 km off the east coast of Scotland.
