Mongolia should step up its fight against desertification to battle the current grim environment, President Tsakhia Elbegdorj said Tuesday.

Elbegdorj also called for learning from other countries' experience in preserving water and forest resources to better rein in desertification.

The president made his appeal at the Environment Ministers' Meeting of the 4th Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM), which brings together delegates from 46 countries and regional organizations including China, Mongolia, Australia, ASEAN, and the European Union.

Noting that water and forest protection have become pressing tasks that the whole world faces, the president urged more cooperation in resolving the issue.

The ASEM Environment Minister's Meeting was initiated by China at the third Asia Europe Meeting in 2000 and the first meeting was held in Beijing in 2002.

The two-day meeting focuses on sustainable water and forest management and aims to provide an opportunity for participating countries to exchange views on developing proper policies and best practices to facilitate further cooperation in environmental protection.
