An earthquake video shot in Tangshan in north China's Hebei province has generated safety discussions from netizens, the China Youth Daily reports.
Closed circuit video in Yingcai School in Tangshan captured the 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday, and it shows students evacuating from the building under their teachers' supervision. Upon feeling the tremor, students were asked to take cover under their desks and teachers ran to open the front and back doors.
Even though some netizens consider the video to be a publicity stunt, Liu Zhongshan, principal of Yingcai School, said he wanted to raise awareness of the importance of emergency drills.
Liu said that Yingcai School holds emergency drills every two weeks, which only take a few minutes but provide invaluable safety to students.
Liu Jiankai, the chairman of the school, was a firefighter for 10 years and said that students need to be educated about emergency escape drills. He also invited firefighters to illustrate how to use fire extinguishers.
After watching the 6-minute-long video, officials from the Tangshan Education Authorities said that there are similar drills for every school in Tangshan.
Zheng Xiangjun, a spokesperson for the Tangshan Earthquake Administration, said that there are one or two earthquakes in Tangshan every year, so schools pay more attention to emergency drills. Zheng also said that the video had taught the netizens an important lesson.
