More than 269,000 people have been displaced and some 465,400 houses have been damaged by floods in Pakistan last month, a spokesman with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Friday.

Jens Laerke said the flash floods in Pakistan's Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan provinces triggered a humanitarian crisis which continues to unfold.

Pakistani authorities estimated that 5 million people are affected by the floods and they are in need of food due to loss of corps, Laerke said.

He said OCHA established a humanitarian coordination center in Sukkur city for the operations in Sindh province, and deployed staff to support the response in Balochistan.

In the first phase of the response, 140,000 flood-affected people have received monthly food rations in Sindh and Balochistan, and humanitarian agencies have supplied medicines for nearly 450,000 people in the flood affected areas, he said.

Also on Friday, Marixie Mercado, spokesperson for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned of a serious malaria threat, especially for malnourished children caused by the floods which remain two to three meters high in many rural areas of Pakistan.
