Heavy rains have left hundres of homes and industrial buildings in northeast of Slovenia flooded, the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) reported on Monday.

The worst affected is the town of Duplek, about 130 km northeast of Ljubljana, where more than 250 homes were flooded and domestic animals were evacuated from five local farms.

Dravograd, 113 km northeast of Ljubljana, also suffered greatly when Drava and Meza rivers flooded numerous residential and industrial buildings in the area, the report quoted Mayor Marijana Cigala as saying.

In addition, Sava rivers have also flooded roads and properties from Bohinj lake to Kranj, which are some 30 to 70 km northwest of Ljubljana. The heavy rains have triggered several land slides, mostly in the area of Bohinj.

At least 120 troops have been mobilized to help people in the disaster region while fire fighters have provided some disaster areas with sandbags and helped the flood victims in pumping water from their homes.

Serious flooding is expected in the Drava basin in eastern Slovenia after heavy rainfall upstream in Austria swelled the river.

"Flooding is unavoidable," Mitja Bricelj, the co-chair of the Slovenian-Austrian Intergovernmental Commission for the Drava, was quoted as saying.
