A 5.5-magnitude temblor hit Sirch of Kerman in Iran's southeastern Kerman province at 19:48 GMT on Monday, according to the Iranian Seismological Center.
The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 30.37 degrees north latitude and 57.46 degrees east longitude, according to the report.
The telecommunication system in Kerman city, the capital of Kerman province, has been disrupted and people ran out of their homes in panic and concerned about the aftershocks, semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the quake-hit region from the neighboring provinces, the Iranian Red Crescent Society was quoted as saying by the state IRINN TV.
No immediate reports about the casualties are available.
