Mongolia hosts World Environment Day celebrations

Mongolia hosted the World Environment Day celebrations in collaboration with the U.N. Environment Program (UNEP) here Wednesday under the theme "Think. Eat. Save. Reduce Your Footprint."

Prime Minister Norov Altanhuyag told a ceremony Mongolia regarded a green economy and green development as a primary objective and the Mongolian economy's development mode should be transformed from "brown" to "green".

UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said Mongolia had been determined to tackle climate change, water and other environmental challenges, and had been actively pursuing the "green economy" development guideline.

In recent days, Mongolia has held a series of activities to promote development of a green economy, and vigorously develop wind, solar and other renewable energy sources. It also called on producers and consumers jointly to reduce food waste and loss, and adhere to the sustainable development road.

The 27th United Nations General Assembly established UNEP in 1972, and officially declared June 5 as World Environment Day. Since 1974, UNEP has established a theme for World Environment Day each year, and expanded related promotional activities.
