Typhoon brings heavy rainfall to W Japan prefectures

Heavy rainfall caused landslides in western Japan, and ferry services in and out of prefectures in western Kyushu Island were canceled on Friday due to the approach of the season's 4th typhoon, local press reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that the season's 4th typhoon, moving towards northeast in the East China Sea, was already degraded to an extratropical storm on Friday morning.
Although the strength of the storm has continued to decrease, the agency added, it is activating a seasonal rain front which is hitting a wide area of the western Japanese prefectures, such as Kochi, Yamaguchi and Wakayama, where about 350 millimeters of rainfall was recorded since Tuesday.
According to Japan's public broadcaster Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK) , the rainfall had caused several landslides in Kochi Prefecture by Friday morning, forcing road operators to close some local traffic routes. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Local ship operators canceled their sailings between cities in western Kyushu Island and ports of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture, while other ferry companies based in Kumamoto Prefecture also suspended their services to and from the Amakusa Islands on Friday, the NHK said.
The storm also forced the cancellation of some morning flights to and from Tsushima Island, Nagasaki Prefecture.
The meteorological agency warned that the active low pressure system plus the seasonal front will bring more rain across western Japan from Friday afternoon to Saturday, advising people to stay indoors.
