At least four people were injured as big fires raged in the forests and brush on Italian Sardinia island, local media reported on Thursday.

A farmer was burned while attempting to rescue his livestock from the flames, which were fanned by hot winds as temperatures exceeded 40 degrees celsius near the city of Oristano, in Sardinia's western part.

Other three people, including a firefighter, were also reportedly hospitalized due to burns or smoke inhalation.

According to local authorities, fires have consumed more than 2,000 hectares of vegetation on the island over the past few days.

Firefighters used helicopters and water bombers on the flames, helped by volunteers.

Dozens of residents were evacuated from their homes and a group of elderly was also moved out of a nursing home as a precaution.

A number of fires were hitting arid areas of Italy amid ongoing hot weather, destroying thousands hectares of forests.
