A bounty of swimming crabs recently appeared in the sea around Zhoushan city, east China's Zhejiang province, due to decreased fishing resources and overfishing leading to a decline in the population of the crab's natural enemy, the Xiandai Jinbao, a local newspaper in Ningbo reports.

A local fisherman surnamed Du, in Xiangshan, a famous fishing county in Zhejiang, says illegal fishing and business operators here have formed an industrial chain despite it being off-season, ignoring the restrictions of fishing nets.

"The annual mortality rate of fishery resources on the East China Sea is over 90 percent. This is because overfishing far exceeds the regenerative capacity of the fishery resources. " said Xu Hanxiang, director of Zhejiang Mariculture Research Institute.

"As marine resource and community structures on the East China Sea has worsened, there will only be phytoplankton and zooplankton left in the sea." Xu said.

Inadequate law enforcement also leads to sever overfishing in xiangshan. "Economic penalties alone have no effect on curbing the decline of fishery resources. " Xu added.
