Public urged to adopt, not plant, trees

Shanghai authorities are taking to the Internet in a bid to encourage people to adopt a tree rather than planting one this Arbor Day.
The amount of space available in Shanghai for planting trees falls every year, said the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
There are now only three parks in the city that have enough space to accommodate all the requests from people wanting to plant, the bureau said yesterday.
“In contrast, we have 126 green spaces full of trees and in need of care,” bureau official Li Li said.
People traditionally plant trees on Arbor Day, which falls tomorrow, but with the amount of available space dwindling, authorities are hoping the public will instead help cover the cost of caring for the city’s existing green areas.
As a result, the government is promoting its Weibo and WeChat accounts, and its website at lhsr.sh.gov.cn (Chinese only) where people can find out more about the scheme and make their donations.
