China has selected 10 individuals and groups as this year's "marine heroes" to enhance public awareness of the ocean's importance and mark World Oceans Day.
The 10 include Xu Huixi, head of the unmanned submersible Qianlong-1 project, the crew of the icebreaker Xuelong and coastal cleaner Zhao Junyou.
Apart from the selection, other activities such as beach cleaning, ocean exhibitions and visits to marine environment observation stations were conducted across the country on Sunday.
The World Oceans Day was first organized by the United Nations in 2008 and is observed on June 8 each year to raise awareness of the crucial role of the sea and try to prevent pollution and over-exploitation of the oceans.
