A wolf has been seen in the wild in eastern Holland, indicating the return of the animal after over one hundred years, local newspaper Twentsche Courant Tubantia reported on Wednesday.

In the beginning of June a wolf was seen in the area of Ootmarsum in the eastern Dutch region of Twente. Several people in the municipalities of Dinkelland and Tubbergen reported sightings.

The wolf walked across the border from Germany and stayed in Twente for 30 to 48 hours before returning to Germany, according to the reports.

Although the National Forest Service found no DNA, they claim that all indications are that the wolf was in the Netherlands.

The last time a wolf was seen in wilderness in the Netherlands was in 1897. Last year a dead wolf was discovered in Luttelgeest, province of Flevoland. However, this animal appeared to have been brought from Poland.
