A 29-year-old polar bear is quickly becoming known as the saddest animal in the world as it lives in an enclosure at Argentina's Mendoza Zoo where temperatures can routinely exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 F), One Green Planet, a non-profit organization, reported recently.

The polar bear, named Arturo, is thought to become depressed after his companion Pelusa died two years ago.

Experts say he is zombie-like and fear he is going insane, according to The Mirror.

Now Arturo always displays "abnormal behaviors", including showing his teeth, tilting his head, pacing and rocking.

Animal rights campaigners have been circulating online petitions for months in an attempt to remove Arturo from his cruel and lonely living conditions.

In February, Mendoza Zoo blocked a bid to move Arturo to Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, Canada, home to a new International Polar Bear Conservation Centre.

The zoo claimed that the bear would not survive the two-day trip.
