Slovak government approved on Monday a total of 3.06 million euros (4.11 million U.S. dollars) in financial assistance for flood-hit Vratna Valley area in the Northern Slovakia.

A total of 2.42 million dollars will be allocated to Zilina regional government and 1.69 million dollars to the village of Terchova, which was struck by torrential rain Monday last week.

"I'm not ruling out the possibility that the Government will approve further resources for clearing up the damage in the area," said Slovak Finance Minister Peter Kazimir after the extraordinary session during governmental holiday.

According to Zilina regional governor Juraj Blanar, the approved assistance should cover one-third of the overall expenditures required by the authority to secure all the necessary clear-up work.

Blanar said that the task now is to reconstruct and prevent further landslides on the destroyed road in Vratna Valley, which is owned by the region.

The region will also have to dispose of tens of thousands of cubic metres of rocks that were washed down into the valley, blocking the Vavrinka river.

On July 21, the village of Terchova, including the popular tourist destination of Vratna Valley, was hit by torrential rain. This resulted in landslides that destroyed a number of roads in the area.

Vratna Valley is currently inaccessible both to residents and visitors.
