Some 10,000 delegates attending a UN climate change conference in the Peruvian capital of Lima next month will get around in ecological cars, the state Andina news agency reported Wednesday.

A total of 171 electric and hybrid cars, worth 10.2 million U.S. dollars, will shuttle participants to the upcoming conference on Dec. 1-12, the report said.

The use of the "green" cars is an example of Peru's efforts in cutting greenhouse gas emissions that accelerate global warming, Peruvian Foreign Minister Gonzalo Gutierrez said when unveiling the fleet.

After the conference, to be attended by representatives from 195 countries, the cars will be at the service of Peru's 19 ministries and several regional governments, according to Andina.

"What we're seeking is to introduce the latest automotive technology in environment-friendly vehicles in Peru, to promote their use in replacing standard vehicles that emit polluting gases," said Marcela Huaita, secretary general of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
