China's environmental protection ministry released a national air quality report on Monday, covering 74 cities adopted the new air quality standards in 2013.

In 2013, only three cities - Haikou on the island province of Hainan, Lhasa in Tibet autonomous region and the coastal resort city of Zhoushan - met the standards.

They were joined in 2014 by Shenzhen, Huizhou and Zhuhai in southern Guangdong province, Fuzhou in neighbouring Fujian and Kunming in the southwest.

Among them, the 10 cities that reported best air quality are Haikou, Zhoushan, Lhasa, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Huizhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Kunming and Zhongshan, among which the top seven saw discharges of all PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone within the set targets.
