Strong earthquake hits Nepal, at least 688 killed

A powerful earthquake rattled central Nepal Saturday, leaving at least 688 people dead and wrecking damages to buildings.

A massive 7.9-magnitude earthquake has struck Nepal less than 50 miles from the capital, Kathmandu, the U.S. Geological Survey said Saturday.

Death toll has risen to 688, according to Nepal Home Ministry official.

Nepal's Ministry of Home Affairs says more than 150 people have died in the capital, Kathmandu, following the earthquake.

5.9-magnitude quake hits SW China's Tibet, according to China Earthquake Networks Center.

At least 13 Chinese have died in the earthquake, including 11 in the territory of China and 2 in Nepal.

An 83-year-old woman dies in Tibet's Nyalam county in the earthquake. Nearly 70% of the county's buildings were damaged or collapsed, according to Xinhua.

The quake rattled an area between the capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara, according to the US Geological Survey.

Various buildings, including the walls surrounding Nepal's royal palace collapsed after the earthquake rocked Nepal, and at least three people were confirmed killed and two others injured so far, according to one Xinhua reporter on the spot.

Dharahara Tower Tower, a 19th century nine-storey tall tower in Kathmandu, has collapsed in the earthquake, local media said.

The quake was felt in China, India, Malaysia and Bangladesh.

Five people, including two children, were killed when buildings collapsed in different parts of the eastern Indian state of Bihar following the earthquake, said local police.

India has promised to provide emergency aid to Nepal and has sent two military planes to the disaster struck country hours after the quake took place.
