65,000 affected by flood in NE India

At least one person was washed away by turbulent water and the life of nearly 65,000 people have been affected by flood in the northeast Indian state of Assam with the onset of monsoon in northeast India, said local media Tuesday.

Assam has been hit by the first wave of floods in nine districts of the state, the local daily The Times of India quoted officials as saying.

The Brahmaputra and the Jia Bharali rivers were flowing above the danger mark in many areas while some 65,000 people have been affected with their houses submerged or partially flooded, said the report.

The monsoon arrived in India last weekend.
