The female giant panda Mei Xiang at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington has not been a willing participant in the panda team's efforts to switch the cubs since Monday afternoon, the zoo said in a statement yesterday.
The panda team is caring for the smaller cub as Mei Xiang only has the larger cub in her possession.
Both cubs remain in a high-risk period, according to the zoo. Therefore, the team will continue efforts to swap the cubs about every four hours.
Because the smaller cub has been away from Mei, panda keepers are now managing it more intensely.
The little cub's behaviors are good, but the team is concerned about its fluctuating weight, the zoo said.
The most important thing for the panda team is to help the cub get enough fluids and nutrients. To accomplish this, they are bottle and tube feeding the cub.
The zoo said Mei Xiang was doing well and the panda team is confident Mei Xiang is taking very good care of it.
Giant panda Mei Xiang, one of the two adult giant pandas which arrived in U.S. from China on Dec. 6, 2000, gave birth to twin cubs on Aug. 22. She gave birth to her first cub Tai Shan on July 9, 2005 and then her second cub Bao Bao on Aug. 23, 2013.
