Landslides in Cianjur district of West Java have killed 2 people and wounded 7 others as rescuers are trying to evacuate 4 others, a disaster agency official said on Wednesday.

The landslides occurred on Wednesday and Tuesday in Cipanas sub-district and Sukaresmi sub-district, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management agency told Xinhua by phone.

In Sukaresmi sub-district 2 people were killed when the landslides hit a house and another went missing after being buried by mud at another location, Sutopo said.

Separately, in Cipanas sub-district, the landslides hit a hotel, leaving one person seriously injured and 6 others wounded, he said.

Four others are still buried and evacuation is underway, said Sutopo.

Heavy downpours are to blame for the natural disaster in the landslide-prone areas, he said.

Landslide and floods are frequent in Indonesia during heavy rains.
