The Peruvian government pleaded on Wednesday to protect the Amazons and the glaciers at the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Peruvian Congresswoman Elizabeth Leon told local radio station Radio Programs de Peru that the Copenhagen summit "is the event of the year" as the leaders met there are expected to agree on measures to head off global warming.

Leon, member of the Peruvian delegation, also said that there are disagreements between rich and poor countries, because of their divergence on the "shared responsibilities."

Leon said that due to this, it is necessary that Latin America presents a single position.

According to her, the Latin American countries "agree that the fight against climate change must be related to the preservation of the Amazons, but we have to meet and find common points."

The UN Climate Change Conference, which opened on Dec. 7, is to end Friday in Copenhagen. It aims to map out a comprehensive international arrangement for the fight against climate change over the period 2012-2020.
