Syrian President Bashar al-Assad sent Wednesday a congratulatory cable to Chinese President Hu Jintao on Chinese national day, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

On behalf of the Syrian people and his own, al-Assad expressed heartfelt wishes to President Hu and the friendly people of China.

The Chinese National Day is on Oct. 1. The day of this year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China.

Syrian official media also hailed the Chinese-Syrian relations in recent days.

The official Syrian Daily Tishreen hailed Chinese-Syrian ties on Monday, saying that the two countries enjoy wide understanding and reciprocal support on major international issues since diplomatic ties were established in 1956.

Syria supports the one-China policy and opposes any attempt to undermine the reunification of China, said the report.

Meanwhile, China supports Syria's commitment to achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the relevant UN resolutions.

More than 100 Chinese companies have opened their branches in Syria, while thousands of Syrians are doing business in China, the report added.

According to the official statistics, the bilateral trade volume between Syria and China witnessed rapid increase in recent years with 2.27 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.
