An Elementary Course in Scientific Chinese, a series consisting of five books, Listening and Speaking (volume I and II), Reading Comprehension (volume I and II) and Listening Comprehension, has been tailored for foreign students coming to China to study in the various fields within science and technology. This series can also be used by non-native Chinese speakers for teaching or self-study. The whole series has a vocabulary of over 3,900 words, 136 commonly used grammar items and 20 functional-notional items.

Listening and Speaking focuses on the common phrases, grammar structures, common functional-notional items and their expressions in the areas of science and technology. Through focused training in listening and speaking, the students will gradually build up their abilities to communicate effectively.

Reading Comprehension aims to improve students' reading comprehension and increase their reading speed.

Listening Comprehension focuses on improving students' listening comprehension abilities.

The complete course includes instruction in three categories—listening and speaking, reading comprehension and listening comprehension. Listening and speaking is the major course and therefore should be employed a bit earlier than the reading comprehension and listening comprehension parts which act as closely related supplements.

The series has the following characteristics:

1. Focuses on practicality and pertinence. The content of this course is selected from modern scientific language in order to meet the actual studying needs of foreign students who major in science and engineering.

2. Through the five course books, language skills, including listening, speaking, reading and writing, will be practiced separately and the actual communicate abilities can be totally improved.

3. The features of scientific Chinese have been captured through precise concepts, logical statements, and clear organization. The language materials were arranged by using commonly used scientific vocabularies, lexical structure and sentences.

4. We have attempted to combine and utilize structural, situational and functional approaches in compiling the language material.

An Elementary Course in Scientific Chinese forms a set with Introductory Chinese, which can be learnt in advance. After studying the two series, students can acquire the basics of language and communicating abilities to live, socialize and learn science and engineering in China and will be amply prepared to future improve their Chinese.
