Approaching Xihaigu

This is a book of photographs about the environmental conditions and ethnic customs of Xihaigu region in Northwest China. The name of the place, Xihaigu, derives from the name of three counties, Xiji, Haiyuan and Guyuan. In 1953 the State established the Xihaigu Hui Ethnic Autonomous Prefecture with the above three counties as the main part. Later as the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was established, Xihaigu Hui Autonomous Prefecture, as an area within Ningxia, was cancelled, but the poetic name Xihaigu has stricken roots in the local people’s mind. The author visited this area several times and recorded the lives of local people from an unique perspective with his camera.
