Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan province, plans to finish rebuilding quake-hit schools by September 1 this year in order to insure the start of a new semester, Xinhua News reported today.

One hundred and sixty-nine schools in Chengdu, with a total area of 1,528,000 sq meters, were hit by the devastating Wenchuan earthquake last year. The quake left about 87,000 people dead or missing.

As of July 8, buildings in 168 of the 169 schools had been rebuilt, according to Xinhua.
