A soccer coach in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has been detained over a corporal punishment that caused the death of a teenager, local government officials said Sunday.

The officials with the government of Jiulongpo District said Lin Lin, a coach in the local youth sports club, punished a 14-year-old boy Mu Shihao in a training on July 24.

Mu fell to the ground and had been in a coma until he died in a hospital on Aug. 17.

Local media said the coach continued beating Mu even when the boy was scared and was trying to escape.

An autopsy is under way and the results will be published in a month, the district government officials said.
