Iran, Russia Reach Agreement on Nuclear Issue
Adjust font size:

Iran and Russia had reached agreement on Iran's nuclear case, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi told a press conference in Tehran on Wednesday.

But the spokesman did not give any details of the agreement reached between Tehran and Moscow.

Meanwhile, Asefi stressed that Iran would not give up its peaceful nuclear research activities.

"The activities are our inalienable right and no one can make such a request," Asefi said.

Iran resumed talks with Russia on Monday in Moscow on a Russian proposal to defuse the standoff over Iran's nuclear program.

An Iranian delegation, headed by Seyed Ali Hosseini-Tash, Deputy Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), has been talking with Russian officials in Moscow since Monday, SNSC spokesman Hossein Entezami said Tuesday.

Russia proposed last December that Iran transfer its uranium enrichment to Russia to remove the Western fear of the technology being diverted to making nuclear weapons.

Asefi said on Sunday that the Russian proposal would no longer be on the agenda of Tehran due to "change of the situation". The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) decided last Wednesday to refer Iran's nuclear case to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.

But Iran changed its mind on Tuesday. Entezami said in light of the new situation, Iran would reconsider the Russian proposal. The crisis over Iran's nuclear issue escalated after Tehran resumed nuclear fuel research in January.

Iran has insisted that its nuclear program is for fully peaceful purposes.
