Int'l Court actions should help solve Darfur issue
Adjust font size:

Responding to a possible arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, China said Thursday that the ICC's decision should help to achieve stability in Sudan and a proper solution of the Darfur issue.

"The international community should create a more favorable international environment," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a regular briefing.

Jiang emphasized that the Darfur issue recently has seen progress due to positive efforts from all relevant parties, including the Sudanese government.

"Under the current circumstances, the tri-party system of the Sudanese government, the Africa Union and the United Nations, should play a major role in promoting the peace process in Sudan," she said.

Last July, ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo filed 10 charges against al-Bashir and called for an arrest warrant.

The world court is reviewing the case before deciding whether to issue such a warrant. A decision could come as early as this month.
