An earthquake with magnitude of 6. 2 rocked eastern parts of Indonesia on Sunday, with no initial report of damage or casualty, meteorology agency said in Jakarta.

The quake struck at 12:23 Jakarta time (0523 GMT) with epicenter at 20 kms northeast Melonguane of North Sulawesi province and at 50 kms below sea bed, an official of the agency told Xinhua.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 3 to 4 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) at Melonguane, he said.

Indonesia, home of over 230 million people, is laid on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called the Pacific Ring of Fire where two continental plates, stretching from Western hemisphere to Japan, meet and cause frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
