Adjust font size:

Afghan and the international troops, during a joint operation in Taliban birthplace Kandahar, eliminated some three dozen insurgents, a press release of Defense Ministry received Tuesday said.

"The operation involving Afghan and international troops launched in Shah Walikot district early weekend has left 35 insurgents dead," the press release said.

A number of militants were also injured during the operation backed by airpower, it said.

Taliban fighters have yet to make a comment.

The clash took place amid ongoing massive operation against Taliban militants in the neighboring Helmand province.

Afghan and international security forces have decided to restore government control in all areas held by Taliban before Aug. 20 presidential and Provincial councils' election as the insurgents vowed to disrupt it.
