Studying at Tsinghua University

Tsinghua University, one of the leading universities in China, has been active in international cooperation and exchange, investing a significant effort in the internationalization of its student intake. There are 34 undergraduate programs, 81 Master's programs and 61 doctoral programs open to international students. Eight of the Master's programs are delivered in English, and more than 220 courses are offered in English at both undergraduate and graduate level. In the fall semester of 2008, more than 2400 international students from 103 countries are studying at Tsinghua, with 65% pursuing degrees and 35% visiting for advanced studies, joint research, or Chinese language study.

International students have the following options of study at Peking University:

Chinese Language Program;

Undergraduate or graduate degree programs;

Student Exchange Program;

Advanced Study Program.

Qualification of Applicants

Chinese Language Program:

Any foreigner, overseas Chinese, or compatriot from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan may apply directly to the Foreign Student Affairs Office of Tsinghua University. The applicants need to have a formal education background to high school level or above, be of good character, be aged 18-55 and in good health.

Undergraduate Programs:

Foreign citizens under 25 and in good health, with:

(1) Certificate of Graduation from senior high school;

(2) Certificate of HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Band 6 or above.

Graduate Programs:

(1) Applicants for Master's programs should have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent academic background.

(2) Applicants for Doctoral programs should have a Master's degree or equivalent academic background.

(3) Language skills requirements:

(a) For programs taught in Chinese: Applicants for programs of humanities, arts, management, journalism and law should pass Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) band 6; and those for science and engineering programs should pass Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) band 4.

(b) For Master's Programs offered in English: See the requirements of the program.

(c) For Doctorate Program applicants: If English is sufficient, the Chinese language requirement could be adjusted for some majors.

Student Exchange Program:

(1) Student Exchange Agreement (or MOU) signed between home university and Tsinghua University;

(2) At least one year's study completed at home university.

Advanced Study Program:

 For General Visiting Students: at least one year’s study at college or higher, HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Band Six or above.

For Senior Visiting Students: Master's degree or higher, HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Band Six or above.

Applicants who have good competence in English and are capable of taking English-taught courses may ask for a lowering of or a waiver of the HSK requirement.

Application Procedure

Chinese Language Program:

Applicants first need to complete the on-line Application, on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University (http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn). After all the information submitted is verified, the applicant may download and print out the Application Form from the system. Then, the applicant shall submit the signed hardcopy of the Application Form, together with other application materials required, to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University, by post or in person.

Undergraduate Programs:

The applicants first need to complete the on-line Application, on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University (http:// intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn).

The On-line Application System produces The Application Form after all the information needed is provided. Then, the applicants shall submit the signed hardcopy of The Application Form, together with other application materials, to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University, by post or in person.

In the case of applications for Arts and Design, the application materials are to be submitted to Office of Academics, Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University.

Graduate Programs:

Step 1: Online Application:

Complete on-line Application on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University (http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn). Print and sign two hard copies of the Application Form produced by the system, as well as the downloaded Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship (for future students).

If applying for MBA or International MBA in School of Economics & Management, please apply through website http://newmbaedu.sem.tsinghua.edu.cn:8090

If apply to Master in International Development in School of Public Policy & Management, please apply through website http://mid.sppm.tsinghua.edu.cn/application/online.asp.

Step 2: Documents submission:

Submit the application materials listed above to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University, by post or in person. For applicants to Masters programs offered in English, hard copies of application materials should be submitted to the relevant department/school.

Student Exchange Program:

Applicants first need to complete the on-line Application, on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University (http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn). The On-line Application system produces The Application Form once all the information needed is provided. The Student Exchange Program Office of the home university sends the signed Application Form together with other application materials by post to the Foreign Student Affairs Office of Tsinghua University.

Advanced Study Program:

 Applicants first need to complete the on-line Application, on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University (http:// intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn). The On-line Application system produces The Application Form after all the information needed is provided. Then, the applicants shall submit the signed hardcopy of The Application Form, together with other application materials, to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University, by post or in person.

Insurance

Insurance: 600 RMB (per year)

Accommodation Information

Run by the Zijing Property Management Center of Tsinghua University, the students' dormitories offer three types of rooms to international students: Single Room; AB Double Room; Double Room. All the rooms are provided with air-conditioning, telephone, color TV and internet access.

Prior to entrance registration at FSAO, new students may apply for dormitory accommodation at the reception desk of Zijing Building 19. The Admission Notice issued by the Foreign Student Affairs Office and the applicant’s passport are required. The reception desk serves 24 hours a day and the phone number is +86-10-51535500.

The reception desk accepts RMB cash, and credit card/debit card.

Students living in the campus dormitories should abide by Administration Regulations on Accommodation for Further Education and Foreign Student Apartment.

According to the Rules for the Implementation of the Law of the People's Republic of China on Control of the Entry and Exit of Aliens, every foreign student who lives off-campus should register to the local police station in 24 hours after arrival. The foreign student should go with his/her landlord to the local police station and apply for a Registration Form for Temporary Residence. This form is a necessity for residence permit or visa applications. It is also required for entrance registration at FSAO.
