Adjust font size:

A multi-functional communications vehicle will be used for the security of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, a security official disclosed on Monday.

The vehicle, which looks plain but will combine the functions of radio and wire communications, as well as microwave image and satellite image transmissions, is expected to be capable to rush to any emergency site to provide all-round command and deployment assistance, said Liu Shaowu, director of the Security Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).

He made the remarks in an interview with the official website of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

According to Liu, the Beijing Olympic Security Coordination Group, composed of people from 20 relevant state ministries and municipal departments, has been working full-time since its establishment in December 2004.

The Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of National Security, the Armed Forces, the Armed Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Administration of Customs, as well as the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Public Security and the Beijing Municipality in general, are among the organs, to name but a few.

The Security Command Center under the group will perform various combat missions for the Olympics, including VIP guard service, sport venue security, anti-explosives checks and security at some vital sections.

Liu, who is also vice-director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Public Security, said a scientific information system for the security of the Olympics has been set up on the basis of research and innovation.

At the same time, he said, the Liaison Department of the Security Command Center has engaged in exchange and cooperation with international security organizations, security and police forces of the Olympic host countries and neighboring countries as well in the areas of security for large-scale events, fight against transnational crime and anti-terror activities.

Pinpointing the volunteer work, Liu said the volunteers are one of the four components of the security forces, which also include the public security forces, the armed police and the security guards. The volunteers will be assigned to some specialized positions such as the security checks. They will mainly come from military, armed police and public security academies and their recruitment will begin this month.
