Kenya's 1,500 meters women runners are eyeing gold at the Beijing Olympic Games to be held next month.

Irene Jelagat, Viola Kibiwot and Nancy Lagat will be returning to China with hopes of getting some medals, as Jelagat having won gold during the Beijing World Junior Championships two years ago.

"I still remember that time as if it were yesterday. I would really want to win at the Olympics and write history as the first Kenyan to bag a medal at the Games," the 20-year-old Jelagat said, according to the Daily Nation on Thursday.

The athletes have the capability of bringing home a haul of medals and emulate the 2006 world junior team that won six gold medals with a cash boost of 100 million shillings dedicated by the government to the Beijing Olympic Games.

They are not only big names locally, but also have over the years been causing track havoc in the European athletic circuit by smashing one record after another.

"My victory in the Paris Grand Prix secured me a slot in the team. Although I won during the trials (4:12.70), I didn't have the qualification time, hence making the race very important," she said.
