The 21-year-old Jamaica, who broke the men's 100m world record and won the Olympic title on Aug. 17, finished the first in one of the semifinals in 20.09 seconds.

Bolt was regarded as being almost sure to win the half-lap race in Beijing, with running the first two season's bests.

U.S. sprinters Shawn Crawford, Wallace Spearmon and Walter Dix will also line up for the 200m final, which is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
