Introduction

The Chinese government respects everyone's right to worship as he or she chooses. Religion in China is as important an aspect of life as it is anywhere else in the world. China honors the individual's right to his or her religious beliefs. Many religions coexist harmoniously here. Chinese people follow a variety of spiritual practices. Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, and Christianity, are all honored as independent but equal doctrines.

As the capital of a country with many faiths, Beijing has a great variety of sacred sites. It is impossible to cover every place of worship of every sect and denomination.  Here is a representative list of popular places of worship in Beijing.
