The United States Olympic Committee issued a statement on Wednesday, commending San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Chief of Police Heather Fong and City Officials for a safe and successful Olympic torch relay.

"We are pleased the Olympic torch, which symbolizes the spirit and ideals of the Olympic Movement, made its way through San Francisco in the hands of so many inspiring individuals. From a global perspective, the City of San Francisco will be applauded," said the statement.

"While, understandably, there may be some disappointment due to the route change, the City indicated all along that public safety was paramount. The decision to amend the route was made with the full consultation and support of the USOC and the Beijing Organizing Committee," said the USOC.

"This was a special day for the torchbearers, the City of San Francisco and everyone who had the opportunity to touch a part of the Olympic Movement, and we thank the City for hosting the Olympic Flame," the statement said.
