Cheers and tears as relay begins in Shanghai
Adjust font size:

Chen Fei, chief captain of Shanghai's fire fighters, carries the torch in the second day of Beijing Olympics torch relay in Shanghai this morning. Chen is the chief commander of Shanghai's rescue team in the quake-hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province.

After more than a week of mourning for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake, Shanghai allowed itself some cheers yesterday as the Beijing Olympics torch began its two-day run through the city.

Celebrations were noticeably muted as the torch wound its way through Shanghai streets. Out of respect, city authorities have shortened the torch route to 200 kilometers and canceled the fireworks display and carnival planned for yesterday.
