History

Boccia is a traditional recreational sport dating back to ancient times. The Italians refined this ancient Greek ball-tossing game in the 16th century. Boccia, also known as bocce, derived its name from the Latin word for ball, bottia. It has been successfully adapted for people with a disability and became a Paralympic sport for athletes with cerebral palsy at the New York 1984 Paralympic Games.
